Gardaí in Drogheda are investigating following an aggravated burglary in Drogheda in which thousands of euro was stolen from an elderly resident.

The incident happened on Duleek Street last Thursday at approximately 12.15pm when two men broke in through the front door and confronted the 79-year-old, who is housebound.

The pair initially told the man they were gardaí before they stole €3,500 in cash and other items from him.

A spokesperson for the gardaí confirmed they are investigating an aggravated burglary in which two suspects forced their way into a house on Duleek Street and identified themselves as gardaí before becoming aggressive and grabbing the pensioner.

The two suspects fled the scene in an unknown direction and the elderly resident managed to contact his family to raise the alarm.

The garda spokesperson said that while the man had not received any serious physical injuries, he had been very shaken by his ordeal.

He said gardaí would like to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time and say anyone or anything suspicious.

Full door to door enquiries and a CCTV sweep of the area have been completed, he added.
