ACCESS to MRI scans at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital will be hastened due to a new scanner to be installed in December, according to the NEHB.

The hospital received planning permission for the new MRI unit recently and it will be installed before Christmas. The unit allows for a range of scans including cardiac, vascular and whole body imaging.

This unit will provide a five day scanning service in Drogheda. It replaces the current mobile MRI service provided in Navan and Drogheda, two days per week.

A spokesperson for the NEHB said: ‘Patients will have much more rapid access to MR scans for both routine and urgent investigation.’

She further stated that the new service in Drogheda confirms ‘the commitment of the North Eastern Health Board to the development of regional services based in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.’

The MRI is a Magnetic Resonance scanner which provides ‘state of the art imaging services’ according to the NEHB.

An on-site Magnetic Resonance (MRI) scanner will be installed at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda in December, and a new MRI service will commence there in early 2005.

This development will provide state-of-the-art MRI imaging services for the whole NEHB region.

Patients will have much more rapid access to MRI scans for both routine and urgent investigations. This is a major development in imaging for the region and will also significantly enhance the services provided in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

The scanner is the latest advanced Siemens 1.5T Avanto unit with sophisticated software allowing a full range of scans to be performed, including cardiac, vascular scans, and whole body imaging.

The scanner is also much quieter and faster than previous units available, significantly improving patient comfort and throughput.

The regional MRI scan service in the Lourdes Hospital is being provided along with the new CT scanner in Our Lady’s Hospital, Navan, via an innovative public-private partnership.

The new MRI scanner confirms the commitment of the North Eastern Health Board to the development of regional services based in the Lourdes Hospital.
