Man jailed after break-in spree

STEPHEN Burke of 45 Boice Court was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment when he appeared at Drogheda District Court in relation to a number of incidents, including a number of break-ins. Judge Flann Brennan also directed that he receive treatment for his drug addiction while in custody.
Evidence was given that gardai went to the Aldi Store at Mell on October 7, 2013 after the alarm was activated. A glass panel had been broken and €268 worth of alcohol taken. The defendant was identified on CCTV.
Later the same night, the alarm was activated at Lidl, Donore Road and the front door broken. Vodka valued at €104 was stolen and again the defendant was identified on CCTV.
He was arrested for public order offences when gardai found him trespassing at the rear garden of a house on March 7 last.
Burke had also been arrested when gardai were called to Tesco, West Street on February 2 as he was very drunk and refused to leave when requested to do so.
He also admitted breaking into Kilsaran NS on April 4 last and St Joseph's NS Mell on July 8. €400 worth of damage was caused when classrooms in the latter school were ransacked and a window broken. The court heard he had 21 previous convictions.
Solicitor Mr Paddy Goodwin said his client was well-known to the court and was hopelessly addicted to benzos.
