A PROPOSED 'Picnic in the Park' event at Donor's Green on Sunday, July 27, has led to a stand-off between chief organiser Cllr Frank Godfrey and Drogheda Port Company.

The Port states that there needs to be public liability insurance and a safety statement for the event, but Cllr Godfrey says there is insurance on the site 'for the other 364 days of the year' and why not on July 27.

The Port claims that Donor's Green is not a park within the meaning of public parks, but a green space where people can 'walk, chat or meet friends'.

They say they do not have a problem with Donor's Green remaining open to the public, but have concerns when 'public meetings or events' are held on the green.

In a letter to the councillor, they say 'the company is not, in principle, opposed to an event such as the one you propose' but would need to be satisfied in relation to all insurance and health and safety issues regarding the organisation of such an event before it could be sanctioned by them.

'A safety statement for the event would be required in addition to the organisers satisfying the company that the relevant public liability insurance is in place,' they added.

But Cllr Godfrey says the event is going ahead.

'The park belongs to the people of Drogheda and it has been used as a public park since 1860.'

He says the area was rundown and neglected until a group of local volunteers transformed it. 'It was dangerous until we cleaned it up as part of The Gathering,' he stated.

He claims the park was wasteland until engineer Patrick F Donor saw the need for a park for the people and developed it with that intention.

'I think the Port Company should sponsor this informal picnic Sunday and meet up with the residents in their area,' he added.

The event is planned between 3-6pm on July 27.
