A NEW talent competition open to primary and secondary schools in Drogheda, Balbriggan, Ashbourne and the surrounding areas will get underway in October.

The School Stars talent show will run in the TLT Concert Hall in Drogheda from October to December and offers students a chance to showcase their talents in two categories - a Junior category for primary schools and a Senior category for secondary schools.

A major launch of the event, backed by CocaCola through Beverage Business Solutions, AIB and The Sound Shop, will take place on Friday August 27th at Scotch Hall from 4.30pm to 6pm.

A local dance group will entertain the crowds and full details of the shows will be revealed.

' Well-known Irish comic and locally based Joe Rooney will be the MC for the TLT shows,' a spokesman for the centre stated,

Students will get a chance to exhibit a range of talents from singing to break dancing to comedy and anything else in between. Each school can submit a maximum of 15 acts, giving each school and its numerous students a realistic chance of competiting in, and perhaps even winning, the competition.

Live auditions will take place in October and will be judged in four categories - performance, presentation, originality and entertainment value. The best acts will be chosen and advanced into one of four quarter-finals. Then, the acts will be whittled down by a combination of a judging panel and an audience vote to two semi-finals and the grand finals, the latter of which will take place in December.

A total prize fund of €11,000 is up for grabs, with the winning schools in the Junior and Senior categories receiving €3,000 each, while the overall winning acts in their respective categories will earn €1,000 each for their performances.

The runners-up will also receive cash prizes for their efforts, with the second-placed schools in the Junior and Senior categories receiving €1,000 each and the runner-up acts receiving €500 each.

Any school/student interested in participating in the competition must submit an application form and an accompanying CD featuring a recorded performance of their talent to the Sound Shop in Drogheda by 5pm on September 27th.

The competition is in partnership with the TLT Concert Hall - which will host the live auditions, the quarter and semifinals, and the grand finals - plus the Sound Shop and the Drogheda Independent, which will provide coverage of the talent show with the competition winners being interviewed for the paper.
