AN 18-year-old man was kidnapped at gunpoint in Termonfeckin on Sunday night, before being held for hours, and his father and brother beaten in their home.

The teenager, named locally as Gerry Finnegan, was assaulted by two masked men, one armed with a gun, at the location on Big Street at 11.30pm.

Gardai are investigating motives for the incident. Initial reports said it was an arranged meeting to sell a car.

A bag was placed over the victim's head, before being taken at gunpoint to a disused farmhouse in Newtownstalaban and held there for a number of hours.

He was then taken to his own house where his father and brother were beaten by up to four masked men, and received minor injuries.

His mother and grandmother were also present, but were unharmed.

The house was searched and property to the value of €1,000 was removed.

The four masked men left the house in the owner's car ,which was found burnt out a short time later.

'This was a particularly violent incident, and we are appealing to witnesses who may have seen anything suspicious in the Termonfeckin, Newtownstalaban or Garveystown areas between 11.30pm and 4am, to please come forward,' said a senior garda source.

'We are investigating all possible avenues and keeping an open mind on motives.'
