SENATOR MARY Moran has extended an open invitation to interested people to participate in a public consultation meeting on suicideon Tuesday, December 4, at 7.30 p.m. in the Crown Plaza Hotel in Dundalk
The purpose of this meeting is for each and every member of our community, groups and organisations to make representations on this very important issue to Senator John Gilroy who is the Special Rapporteur on Suicide Prevention to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children.
Senator Gilroy is currently compiling a report on the issue of suicide and has met with numerous representatives from the professional, voluntary and community sectors throughout the country.
'As Seanad spokesperson on Mental Health I have been working closely with him with this report,' said Senator Moran. 'I have invited Senator Gilroy to address the meeting on Tuesday, December 4, to engage in active consultation with people from the Louth and surrounding areas. In my opinion it is imperative to listen to the views, opinions and concerns of members of the public in order to provide a realistic and informative report. I am delighted that the people of Louth will now have the opportunity to have their opinions included in the final report.
She urged anyone who has an interest in this area to come along to the meeting and share their views. 'Given that often people are not consulted on issues of public policy I feel that the meeting will provide important and valuable insights,' she said.
