A CHEQUE for an incredible €56,554.64 was presented to the Irish Cancer Society last week in Drogheda from local fundraising events.

The local Irish Cancer Society volunteers made the remarkable donation as they hosted the third Annual Pink Santa Lunch in conjunction with principle sponsor West 29 Restolounge.

'We had a full house of over 100 ladies on Sunday, and it was a very successful lunch,' said founding committee member Lizanne Allen.

'Head of National Fundraising at the Irish Cancer Society Mark Mellett was there to receive a cheque, and he was astounded at the amount, and also said he gets a feel-good factor when he comes to Drogheda, as he can tell we all still enjoy what we do.'

He gave a sincere and warm speech before the meal in recognition of how the people of Drogheda and its environs continue to support cancer services locally and nationwide.

Traditionally raising funds directly for Irish Cancer Society, this year all proceeds from the event will go to the Drogheda Oncology Services via the North East Cancer Research and Education Trust - NECRET.

'The atmosphere on Sunday was fantastic, with all the ladies very glamourously turned out for a visit from Pink Santa,' said Lizanne. 'Indeed there was a queue to sit on Santas knee!'

Raffle prizes, spot prizes and gifts from Santa were kindly donated by local businesses, with the principle donors being Boyd Stores, Gosh Cosmetics, Black Bull, Simona Café, Town&Country Stores, Penneys, Town Centre Pharmacy, Hilda Mahers Chemist, Black Bull Chemist, Bettystown Pharmacy, Aqua Beauty Therapies, Nicola McMullen Sports Massage, Avant Garde Make-Up Academy, Bradley's Chemist.

Principle sponsor was West 29 Restolounge, entrée sponsored by Halco Hire, main course sponsored by Shane Black Property Advisors, desert sponsored by friends of the committee and wine sponsored by Peter Mathews of Blue Steel.

'I have to also thank the Westcourt Hotel for their continued support, and of course our amazing committee including Mary Convery, Edeltraud Kycke, Jean Coulter, Niamh Matthews, Vicki Mathews, Rebecca Doherty, Joanne Allen and Gráinne Black.

'It is super to have young blood on board, and we are full steam ahead for a packed programme of events in 2014.'

She added they are grateful to all the volunteers who collect on Daffodil Day, give their time to various fundraising events, and those who run events large and small, adding to the tally, as well as the generous people of Drogheda.
