Harbison Ironmongers

THEY didn't mess with Mr Harbinson, who once ran an ironmongers on West Street.

Back in 1909, local shop owners also had problems with robberies, and didn't take kindly to thieves. After a series of incidents, he decided to stake out his premises and on a September morning, about 5.30 a.m., he spotted a man using a ladder to climb over a wall into his yard. He called out for the raider to stop, but he ran for it and Mr. Harbinson drew a revolver and let off a shot. The raider tried to get out a window but was caught by shop assistants who arrived at the scene.
