THERE could be a host of new hackey licences handed out in the mid Louth area – if the local authority gives them the go ahead.

Under new legislation from the taxi regulator, a hackney licence can be given out for €50 and is intended as a community service.

Ardee Town Clerk Joe McGuinness told a recent meeting that they can issue a letter of support if an application comes in, especially if there's a need in terms of local transport.

Cllr. Finnan McCoy feels the area needs an all night service. 'There is no local bus service in Ardee and there's a limited one to the likes of Navan hospital so, a bit like doctor on call, we need a transport service,' he said.

Cllr Mary Kavanagh did suggest that there could be a 'glut of applications' and was there a criteria to getting one. Cllr Fintan Malone said there were six hackneys already in the town.
