HAVE you ever wanted to run off to see the world; jump on board a ship and go anywhere?
Exactly 60 years ago a young man from 5 Church Street, Drogheda did it!
Patrick Early, then 16, went missing from his home in late October. But he was discovered about six weeks later in Dublin. He had been working on a coal boat, the Hazelfield, which docked in Dublin the previous day.
The skipper of the boat had identified him from newspaper photographs and informed the authorities. Apparently Patrick obtained a job on a boat travelling between Rotterdam and Dublin before signing up on the Hazelbrook which was working between Dublin and Liverpool.
His father came up to see him and after some discussion, it was agreed Patrick could stay on board.
So how did this story end?
