IT was the end of an era, as Mayor Richie Culhane described it.

One of the last official actions by Drogheda Borough Council took place on Sunday morning with the annual Halpin and Moran memorial wreath laying ceremony on the Marsh Road.

Speaking at the event, the mayor said that generations of councillors had taken part in the event as part of a distinct corporation/borough and next year it would be a municipal function.

'It's important to recall events like this,' he told the Drogheda Independent.

Members of the ex-servicemen's and women's organisation, ONE, formed the colour party and saluted the sounding of the Last Post.

Fr. Francis Ahern of the Augustinians said the prayers and spoke about the sacrifice of both men.

They were gunned down on that spot by the Black and Tans.
