A RIGHT winger and centre-half are top of Mick Cooke's wish list for January as the Drogheda United manager finalises preparations for the resumption of pre-season training.
The squad, which currently comprises 20 players, will reassemble on Saturday January 12th, ahead of a busy programme of friendlies against Wexford Youths, Athlone Town, Longford Town and an AUL Selection, and a two-leg Setanta Sports Cup tie against Portadown on February 11th and 18th.
Venues for those friendlies haven't been confirmed and will be dictated by the weather and the condition of pitches.
In addition, the annual Jim Malone Cup match against Dundalk has been pencilled in for Friday March 1st in Oriel Park, exactly a week before Drogheda kick off their League of Ireland season with a trip to St Patrick's.
It may seem a daunting schedule, but the prospect of playing twice a week is one that the Boynesiders will have to become accustomed to once the league season kicks off, especially if they enjoy success in the knockout competitions.
'A lot of young players are coming home from England at the moment and I would maybe be looking at a wide right player, a centre-back and a young, third-choice keeper with the amount of games we are going to have, but other than that I'm happy with the squad,' Cooke said.
The manager reiterated his desire to extend his contract at Hunky Dorys Park, with no deal agreed in the days coming up to Christmas.
'I have a year left and I'll sit down in the New Year and thrash out another deal. They want me to stay on and I'm happy to stay. We're happy that we're heading in the right direction and we've a lot to build on from last year.'
