MAIREAD IN TOWN
Local MEP Mairead McGuinness was in Ardee on Friday last to support the Good Morning Louth, a new free and confidential telephone service for older people.
The MEP said it is great that the message is beginning to get out and more and more older people are availing of the service. "This service has a very important aim, that of ensuring that older people accessing it are safe and well in their homes. But it also brings into the home information on services and entitlements.
'A wide range of listening services are on offer, including the possibility to share worries or concerns and knowledge about useful local services. In so doing it is keeping people more closely linked into their local community.' The MEP said the service can react swiftly where a prearranged call to an older person is not answered, alerting family members or emergency services as required.
'This important community based service is staffed by local volunteers, many of whom are retired and willing and able to give something back to their community.'
Ann Murphy, co-ordinator of the Good Morning Louth Service said they are reaching into communities and would be delighted to help if older people in the general Ardee area who wished to avail of the service would make contact with them.
Ann explained that the service is a direct link with older people and can range from a quick good morning call to check that all is well to a longer conversation about anything that is on the person's mind.
The service is targeted at those over 65 and can be accessed at 042/9330103.
A wonderful place I must give a mention to is the Ardee Parish Centre.
As a location for anything it is a must and Mark McCormnack staged a couple of very successful White Collar Boxing nights while some of the top singers in the country have also graced it.
It's open for 21sts and other parties so for some family fun, contact them at 6856721 for full details.
It's a great community facility.
