Goals galore for Drogheda United

Published 16/01/2013 | 09:22

DROGHEDA PLAYED a total of 48 games in all during their season, winning 15, drawing 10 and losing 23, scoring 67 goals and conceding 82.

Last season, out of a total of 37 games, they won eight, drew 12 and lost 17, scoring 32 and conceding 47. This year's tally of 67 goals, therefore, was over twice as many as last season and was the highest total in Drogheda's history.

The most previously was 63 in 37 matches in 1968-'69, when the highest number of wins, 16 (one more than this year) was achieved. These two seasons easily stand out ahead of the test in every way.

The most profitable opponents were St. Patrick's Athletic from whom Drogheda took six points out of eight, and Athlone four out of six.

There were a number of "firsts" chalked up during the year.

They played in their first Cup final, of course, and also scored first wins in Athlone, Milltown and Finn park.

Mick Conroy established a record as the first player to score in five consecutive appearances and Pat Cullen got the first Drogheda "hat-trick" in four years.

For the first time, Drogheda won four successive away games – against Transport, Rovers, Drumcondra and Athlone, scoring 16 goals in the process.

The most versatile players in the club were Pat Whelan, who filled seven jerseys – numbers 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 – and Andy McSwiney who played at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 10.

The following is the full list of appearances by the players who appeared on the first team, with goals scored in parenthesis:- Baxter, 45; Wallace, 3; Dowling, 44, 1 sub.; Nolan, 10,, 2 subs.; Corbally, 25; Lougheed, 30, 1 sub.
