Rocking it out for Rory Smith
A rock event to mark the memory of a very well known and popular man Rory Smith known as 'Pops' and the 'Gentle Giant', will take place The Thatch Pub, Donore Rd on Saturday 13th May at 9pm.
Tickets €10 available on the night. All proceeds will support local cancer treatments in the Oncology Unit in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. Rory, from Rossin, was tragically killed during a charity bike run.
A former student at St Oliver's CC, he worked in Premier Periclase for 27 years and was a great charity fundraiser. All welcome. Grand bid for Vantastival at Odd Mollies. An online public vote has chosen five acts to compete in the live final of the Firestone Battle of the Bands competition, part of the European Firestone Music Tour's association with this year's Vantastival.
Drogheda's Gypsy folk act GRAND, Dundalk favourites Accidents in the Workplace and Nix Moon, electro-rock band Makings from Killany, and Monaghan's Lowlight Gathering have come out on top in the public vote and will proceed to the live final next Thursday 11th May at 8pm in Odd Mollies, Drogheda.
On the night the bands will perform for a judging panel comprising journalist Tony Clayton-Lea, Today FM Head of Sound Gavin Blake, Colm Conyngham from Bridgestone Ireland and Vantastival Director Benny Taaffe. The overall winner will headline the Firestone Music Station stage at this year's Vantastival, and will receive a significant prize package including residential recording time at the renowned Grouse Lodge Recording Studios and Musicmaker equipment worth a combined total of €4,000.
There is a €4 admission fee for the live final. Vantastival is the only Irish festival to be included in the European Firestone Music Tour, which will give up-and-coming artists the opportunity to perform at festivals across Europe.
