A DROGHEDA girl is riding high after securing a place as a finalist to compete for a job as a jockey in one of the country's top stables.

Megan de Souza is currently taking part in TG4's six part series Jockey Eile and has made it through to the nailbiting finale which will air on TG4 this Sunday, December 22.

The 19-year-old has grown up around horses at her home in Duleek and was 'almost born in the saddle' according to her mum Genia!

Having started a degree in Science in Trinity College Dublin Megan dropped out of the course to pursue her dream of becoming a jockey.

After spotting the advertisement for the Jockey Eile competition, Megan entered alongside some 1,800 other applicants and was one of 80 chosen to take part in an open day at Fairyhouse and was later chosen as one of 20 finalists to participate in a bootcamp which formed the basis of the Jockey Eile programme.

Her love of horses and racing comes as no surprise, as Mum Genia has worked with horses all her life and revealed Megan's first time on a horse was at the tender age of just one week old!

'I have worked with horses all my life so it is definitely in the genes - or in the jodphurs!' laughed Genia, who revealed Megan's brother, Kyle (25) is also a keen horseman.

'She rode her first Inter Schools competition for Mount Hanover at the age of six and she has always been a natural.'

Genia said the whole family are extremely proud of Megan and what she has achieved and were all there at Fairyhouse for the final race which determined the winner of the series.

To see whether Megan wins the race and the opportunity to secure her dream job as a jockey, tune in to TG4 on Sunday night at 8.15 p.m.
