A LARGE number of band members, family and friends gathered in the Lourdes Brass Band's bandroom to celebrate the appointment of Mr Harry Kelly as Honorary President of the Lourdes Brass Band.

The position of Honorary President is not something the Lourdes Band bestows lightly as there has only ever been one previous holder of the post, the late Mr.Tommy Mc Cormack, of Yellowbatter.

Band Chairman Colin Black presented Harry with a certificate confirming his presidency of the Lourdes Band.

In his address, Mr Black praised Harry's many qualities as a teacher, advisor, conductor, and father figure to the Band.

He commended Harry's value of integrity, which he brought to his band duties over a period of 23 years, and thanked him as a true friend of the Band and its members.

There are certain qualities which are sought for in any potential candidate: loyalty, honesty and integrity, and these were found in abundance in Harry Kelly.

Harry moved to Ireland in the early 1980s and took up the post of Musical Director the Lourdes Brass Band in 1990. For the past 23 years Harry has been an integral part of the band. His reputation in Irish bands was second to none and from his appointment the Lourdes Brass Band never looked back, winning multiple Regional titles and National Titles both North and South of the border.

Throughout Harry's many years of service with the Lourdes Band he has touched the lives of many musicians both young and old.

Messages of congratulations from across Ireland and the UK were read at the event on Sunday from both past and present members who were unable to attend.

The Band's current musical director Mr. James MacCafferty, of the Garda Band, sent his warmest congratulation stating "The Lourdes Band is very lucky to have such an extraordinary musician as President" and that "it was an honor to work alongside Mr. Kelly". The Band's committee would like to thank everyone who helped make this a special occasion in the bands history.

The Lourdes Brass Band with Harry Kelly will the preforming at the annual deceased members mass which will be held in Holy Family Church this Sunday at 12.30 pm. while the band's annual Christmas concert will take place on December 17th in the Droichead Arts Center.
