KILBRIN completed a hattrick of Duhallow Junior B Football Championship titles on producing a performance of grit and determination to better Ballydesmond at a rainlashed Mallow on Saturday last.
Both sides took the chill out of the wretched wind and rain before the defending champions held the flair and composure to stave off a brave Ballydesmond effort. With the game up for grabs, Kilbrin found inner resolve to steady themselves during the closing 10 minutes to swing the outcome. Though performing against a hefty breeze in the second half, Ballydesmond gave it their all in a game of fine endeavour. Ultimately, it was not to be for a well balanced Kilbrin recovered from a spell of wayward shooting to land the spoils.
Favoured by the elements in the opening half, Ballydesmond scorched into an early lead on points to Andy Moynihan and Patrick Leader. Far from being discouraged, Kilbrin struck back into contention and a well worked move allowed Kieran Sheahan feed Liam Daly to goal. Ballydesmond's early sparkle had evaporated, Kilbrin offering more prowness from points to Daly and Daniel O'Sullivan. When Ballydesmond required a lift, it was provided by the efforts of Jason Murphy, Shane Kelly and Nicky O'Leary.
Creating goal scoring chances, Leader and Sean O'Sullivan went close before on the call of the interval, Ballydesmond were rewarded from a through ball from Aidan Fleming found Richard Flynn to net. Trailing 1-4 to 1-2, Kilbrin redressed the situation quickly upon the resumption on points to Daly and Daniel O'Sullivan. Ballydesmond responded from their lone score to the second half, courtesy of a Moynihan pointed free.
That score kept Ballydesmond ahead for a spell as Kilbrin bemoaned scoring opportunities, 10 wides in the second half confirmed a frustrating picture. However Kilbrin kept pushing forward, the momentum maintained by the efforts of Neil Cronin, Paudie O'Callaghan, Kieran Sheahan, Jeoffrey O'Callaghan and Daly.
