CAVANAGH'S FERMOY AVONDHU DIV 1 HL Sarsfields 3-8 Castletownroche 1-13 SARSFIELDS held on for a close victory over Castletownroche in the Cavanagh's Fermoy Avondhu Div 1 HL at Castletownroche on Sunday.
As the scoreline suggests very little separated the sides all through. The early stages saw the home team quick off the mark with Mark O'callaghan getting through for the games opening goal that moved them into a 1-2 to 0-1 lead.
However, gradually Sarsfields got up to the required pace and their abilty to strike for goals during this half courtesy of Sean Quinn, David Crowley and Eoin O'sullivan helped them hold a 33 to 1-6 advantage at the interval.
The second half was again keenly contested and despite Sarsfields moving six clear at one stage they were pegged back entering the final quarter when Conor English, Eoin O'sullivan, Niall Horgan, Jonathan O'callaghan, Mark O'callaghan and Muiris Browne having some well taken points for their respective sides 3-6 to 112.
With both teams sensing victory both Castletown and Sarsfields battled hard for supremacy from here. The Imokilly outfit who struck a number of wides throughout the second half edged in front again when Eoin O'sullivan adding a point from a '65' in the 49th minute that moved them two clear.
Castletown roche showed good battling qualities in the closing that resulted in them being awarded two close in frees before the final whistle. The first effort by Jonathan O'callaghan was saved on the line while his second effort at the end of normal time went narrowly over the crossbar for a point.
