Kiskeam 2-11 St. John's 2-3 A MORE experienced Kiskeam held enough craft and scoring ability to see off a brave St. John's in a highly entertaining Duhallow Junior B Football Championship Group 1 Final played in Mallow on Friday night last.
Putting together a well organised and efficient performance , Kiskeam's second string outfit collected championship accolades for the first time since 2001. Credit, St. John's seeking a first time win in their history and they fought gallantly in search of a breakthrough.
Indeed, St. John's had remained well in contention past the three quarter stage, trailing by two points but Kiskeam offered a new found clinical streak highlighted on a late Tom O'Sullivan goal to romp home deserved winners.
The keeness of the exchanges kept the attendance entertained in the opening half, St. John's nudging ahead from a Neally Corkery point. Kiskeam got to grips with the situation once Paddy O'Connor tied up the game.
And Kiskeam had good reason to feel satisfied after John Sheahan won a penalty and Dave Carroll neatly tucked away into the net. As both defences stamped their authority on the proceedings, scores didn't come with any degree of regularity.
St. John's had cause for optimism thanks to the workrate of Brian O'Sullivan, Liam Dennehy, Corkery and Seán Barrett. And the hopes of Cork's newest club earned a boost after Corkery netted from the penalty spot for his side trail 1-4 to 1-2 at the break.
Kiskeam returned to the action, the more energised side, powered on by the steady play of Jack O'Sullivan and Daniel O'Connor in defence, Jamie Carroll and Jeremiah McAulliffe won good ball in the centre with the relentless probing of Tom O'Sullivan and David Carroll showing real prowness up front.
The latter Carroll showcased his talents with a trio of points from play and frees. In fairness, St. John's hauled themselves right back into it, Shane Kelleher pointed prior to good work by Corkery set up Joe Hayes for a cracking goal in the 44th min to cut the leeway 1-8 to 2-3.
Kiskeam absorbed the lesson and found the right answers with Carroll and O'Sullivan central to carving out the openings in attack. Still the game remained up for grabs until the 56th min., Carroll's accelerating away and supply O'Sullivan to apply the finishing touches to the net.
