CO JBFL Buttevant 2-6 Diarmuid O Mathuna's 0-6 BUTTEVANT are Co JBFL kingpins for 2012 following their win over Co JBFC (1) champions Diarmuid O'Mathuna's at Blarney on Sunday.
This was certainly a game of two halves with the winners impressing in the first half and the Carbery side improving greatly on the resumption. Denis O'Connell opened the scoring after four minutes. Good work by Kevin O'Keeffe and Paul Mannix produced a great save by Gavin O'Leary. Further Buttevant pressure led to a Paul Mannix point. O'Mathuna's had their opening score in the 9th minute when David Nyhan pointed a free. Buttevant defended very well with Aidan O'Connor,
Anthony O'Sullivan and Tadgh Healy doing very well. Michael Barrett pointed a free and just a point separated the sides after 17 minutes.
The Avondhu side forced a penalty when William Fitzgibbon was brought down. Paul Mannix made no mistake and the winners were four points clear. A great clearance out of defence by Brendan Jones led to a massive Sean Madigan point. Diarmuid O'Mathuna's had a punched point by John O'Donovan.
In the dying moments Buttevant struck a major blow – a good delivery by William Fitzgibbon struck the upright with Darragh O'Keeffe on hand to goal and hold a seven point interval lead 2-4 to 0-3. O'Mathuna's made two substitutions on the changeover. They gained control in the half backline and midfield sectors.
They exerted massive pressure on the Buttevant defence. Shane Walsh made a series of massive saves from close range and Miceal Broe and the outstanding Anthony O'Sullivan cleared their lines well.
The Avondhu side were held to a mere two points in this half. They moved 2-5 to 0-3 clear when Sean Madigan pointed. O'Mathuna's had points by John O'Donovan (free). Barry Lordan and David Nyhan worked well for Ted Lordan, but his attempt at goal was well saved by Shane Walsh with the rebound going out for a '45. Midway through the half Buttevant were reduced to 14 men. O'Mathuna's piled on the pressure Ted Lordan worked well putting John Crowley through only to be denied by Shane Walsh conceding another '45 that was cleared.
David Nyhan pointed a free but Buttevant still led by 2-5 to 0-5 lead. Good work by Jerry Nyhan and Miceal Feely set Sean Crowley on a run on goal but once again Shane Walsh came to the rescue and cleared. O'Mathuna's had two quick wides. Buttevant rallied well.
JD Murphy made some good clearances but O'Mathuna's backs were solid. Ted Lordan kept the Carbery side in touch with a point, but they needed at least one goal to have a chance.
Time ran out with both sides making a number of substitutions. Paul Mannix ensured victory with an injury time pointed free. After the game Diarmuid Gowen Co Board Development Officer presented the cup to the winning captain
