SIMCOX CUP FINAL De La Salle, Macroom 0-11 Rochestown College 1-7. THIS was a thrilling Cork Colleges Senior 'A' FC final (Simcox Cup) played at CIT on Thursday night.
The game was played in wintry wet conditions. Rochestown had the aid of the stiff cross wind in the first half. Macroom started well. They had an early point by James Moynihan with Pa Lucey following with a pointed free.
Macroom were unlucky not to goal in the fourth minute when Adam Healy, John Murphy, James Moynihan and Peter Kelleher were involved in a movement that saw Kelleher's effort come back off the crossbar to Pa Lucey who was denied a goal by an alert Rochestown keeper Gavin Connolly.
Rochestown regrouped well and in their first real attack Kevin Hodgins gave them the lead with a goal. The City side dominated the rest of the half. Conor Kingston was outstanding and he placed Andrew Murphy for a great point. Both defences did well using the short pass to clear their lines. Mark Dolan kicked a long range point and David O'Connor cut through on goal only to see his effort go over off the bar. In the 17th minute Alan O'Donovan pointed a free.
Macroom had just two more scores in this half. Good work by Peter Kelleher and William Coakley led to the talented Padraigh Berhanu cutting through on the wing and kicking a great point. Rochestown finished well- Conor Kingston kicked a long range point and David O'Connor added a point. In the 26th minute Berhanu was on hand to place Pa Lucey for a point with David O'Connor having his third point as the game entered injury time to give Rochestown an interval lead 1-7 to 0- 4.
De La Salle were a dominant force in the second half. Their defence did very well with Kevin O'Dwyer and Ciaran Noonan excelling. They won the vital midfield battle and their forwards in regular attack gradually cut into the six point lead.
Pa Lucey pointed a free and Kevin O'Dwyer soloed through placing Padraigh Berhanu for a fine point. Macroom were also wides from a couple of frees but their persistence paid off in the end.
Good work by John Murphy led to a well taken James Moynihan point off the crossbar to come within a goal 1-7 to 0-7. Rochestown still defended very well working the ball at speed out of the backline. However, their forwards were unable to make any progress as De La Salle backs held firm and Rochestown failed to score in the entire second half.
Pa Lucey pointed a free and Peter Kelleher kicked a massive point 1-7 to 0-9 with 12 minutes to go. Lucey levelled with a pointed free in the 28th minute and extra time seemed very likely. The momentum was certainly with De La Salle in injury time and following a three man break out of defence John Murphy gained possession on the wing and kicked a massive point.
This was followed by the final whistle giving Macroom the title for the second year in a row and their third in all.
