AS the scoreline suggests Fermoy, ran out easy winners over Dromina in the opening round of the county IHC at Buttevant.
Over the hour, the better equipped Fermoy side created most of the running ensuring only one outcome. Despite Liam Coleman giving Fermoy an early lead with a pointed free in the second minute it was Dromina that started in a very positive manner as they took the game to their opponents from the offset and in the seventh minute they hit the front when a good clearance out of the half back line by Pat Hayes resulted in Jonathan Jordan getting in behind the Fermoy backline and he finished to the net from a tight angle.
However, Fermoy made a good recovery from here as they went on to dictate matters for the remainder of the tie. From the resultant puckout by Conor Quinn, Jack Hutchings gathered possession to score a long range point while three points from freetaker Liam Coleman (two frees, 0-1 '65) had them leading by 0-5 to 1-0 by the 16th minute.
It was all Fermoy at this juncture and moments later a delivery by Mark Flynn was fetched by Paudie Shanahan on the edge of the square and after turning his marker Shanahan was denied a goal scoring chance when the Dromina keeper Ray Crowley made a vital save on the line.
Further pressure saw Mark Flynn move the winners double scores in front in the 20th minute 0-6 to 1-0. Dromina battled back well over the next couple of minutes as Kevin O'Callaghan, Tomas Clancy, Jack Hutchings and Johnny Delee traded points. However Dromina lacked the scoring threat that Fermoy possessed and instead it was the winners that saw out the half in a flurry with Tomas Clancy, Jack Hutchings, Mark Flynn, Alan O'Connor, Liam Coleman,Kieran Morrisson, Darragh O'Carroll and Jeff Daly pivotal figures.
David Geary and Tomas Clancy with minors stretched their advantage further while just before the half time whistle Mark Flynn had their first goal after Eoin Clancy and Alan O'Connor linked up well helping them hold a sizeable interval lead of 1-10 to 1-2.
For the second half Fermoy were again quick off the mark when Alan O'Connor got proceedings underway when he scored a fine point. Dromina after making a number of positional changes showed glimpses of a second half fightback and in the 33rd minute substitute Ger Healy's effort at goal was narrowly wide following a goal mouth scramble.
At the otherend Fermoy continued to show the greater sharpness with David Geary scoring a great point from out near the sideline before the same player billowed a free to the roof of the Dromina net in the 39th minute that opened up a 2-12 to 1-2 lead.
Dromina to their credit refused to yield with Kevin Hayes, Paddy Hassett, Pat Hayes, John O'Connor and Declan Carroll impressing but at times were unable to break down the better balanced Fermoy side. Dromina missed two further goal scoring chances when Ger Healy was narrowly wide while a free by Kevin O'Callaghan was saved by the Fermoy keeper Conor Quinn at the expense of a '65' that Kevin Hayes eventually pointed from 2-14 to 1-4.
During the last quarter their cause wasn't helped when they had two players dismissed with Fermoy taking full advantage with their midfielders Kieran Morrisson and Alan O'Connor reeling off two points in quick succession.
Dromina replied through Diarmuid Buckley and Kevin Hayes but it was too little too late with the winners scoring 1-2 in the closing moments the goal coming when Tomas Clancy released Jack Hutchings who made no mistake from close range. Fermoy now advance to the knockout stages while Dromina will face Argideen Rangers in the losers section.
