CORK handball enjoyed a further boost last Sunday with Ballydesmond's victory in the 40x20 All-Ireland Junior Inter-club Championship defeating Brackey, Tyrone in the final.
It was a good weekend for Cork clubs involved. Liscarroll got to the Intermediate Final losing narrowly to Williamstown from Galway by just two aces, while Mallow - our representatives in Junior B - lost narrowly to Wexford side Coolgreaney and while they defeated St Comans, Roscommon in their second group game. The team with the highest number of aces in each group progressed to semi-finals with Coolgreaney going forward with a superior ace tally.
The weekend turned out to be very much about Ballydesmond as their win achieved a very unique double for the club as they had already won the 60x30 Junior Inter-club title back in July. The team was John Casey, John O'Keeffe, Donnacha O'Dea and Joseph O'Keeffe.
They defeated a strong Moycullen, Galway side in their semi-final by 40 aces to 20, which sent them through to face Tyrone's Brackey in the final. John Casey and John O'Keeffe were their first pair into action where they had a big battle with a strong Tyrone pair but eventually won 16 aces to 14.
It was now down to Donnacha O'Dea and Jos O'Keeffe to ensure victory and that they did with another competent display eventually winning 20 aces to 10.
In Intermediate there was a cracking final between Liscarroll and Williamstown with the Galway side taking the spoils 43 aces to 41. The Liscarroll team was Tom O'Neill, Denis O'Neill, Arthur O'Neill and Daniel Relihan.
In Junior B a young Mallow side of Ryan Harkin, Darren Whelan, Ciaran Buckley and Ken O'Neill lost to Coolgreaney and defeated St Comans, Roscommon but lost out on aces for a qualifying spot.
Next Sunday will be a busy one for our Mallow Credit Union sponsored juvenile players who travel to Clare venues, Clarecastle, Tulla and Clooney to compete in Munster Primary Schools Inter-county team competitions.
All six Munster counties are competing so it will take a big display from all our young players to be in the shake but it is great experience playing in handball as part of a team.
The two Cork teams are Team A: Cian O'Driscoll, Michael O'Malley, Conor Walsh, Anthony O'Connell (all Mallow), Ballydesmond's Sean Murphy and Boherbue trio Aidan Lenihan, Jerry O'Sullivan and Alan O'Connor.
Team B: Aaron O'Connor, Jerry Duggan, Niall Delaney (Mallow), Luke Barrett and Tommy O'Neill (Liscarroll), Dylan Kearney, Ballydesmond, Michael O'Callaghan, Freemount and BJ Dunston, Boherbue.
There will be plenty of action in Liscarroll this week with both semi-finals of Jerry Hallahan Memorial Team Tournament down for decision; Mallow v Kilworth and Ballydesmond A v the winner of Broadford v Ballydesmond B.
In Joe Collins Memorial Masters Singles Tournament Group C is up and running and there will be a full programme of games each evening during the week at 7.30pm.
County 40x20 championship is also due to commence next week.
