CONNA jockey Pat Mangan ( pictured) caused a major upset win at Thurles races on Thursday last where he won the hugely valuable Grade 2 mares Novice chase on 14/1 chance Nora's Fancy, for his father, trainer Jimmy.
Tarla was the hot odds on favourite at 4/9, but fell two out when appearing held, as Nora's Fancy, having jumped well throughout, led narrowly two out. She led at the last where despite a slight mistake stayed on really well under a fine drive from the saddle to prevail by half a length from Dangan Daylight. Jimmy explained to The Corkman afterwards: "She is a course winner which was a big help, but she just loves soft ground. I really thought we were up against it today, but I suppose if you're not in you cant win. She will stick to mares races for the present."
It was a bittersweet victory for Galway owner Michael Dixon, as his wife Nora, after whose name the mare is called, died just six weeks ago.
