TONY Pierce is a man well used to hoisting unbelievable loads, but this time he is hoping his home town will be the one to give him a lift.

Macroom's record-breaking weight-lifting champion is looking to go to another world championship this summer, 30 years on from winning his first trophy in the sport.

However, Tony has admitted that he needs help from local people or businesses if he is to make it to the Single Lift World Championships in Germany next June.

Tony turns 55 in March, but that hasn't stopped him lifting incredible weights and setting records, to boot.

While Tony has won 16 national and 21 world titles and has represented Ireland at numerous international events, he told The Corkman this week that he is currently without a sponsor, and in need of support if he is to compete.

Tony said that he is hopeful that he can reach an agreement that would see him promote local businesses in exchange for help in travelling to Germany.

"If they want me to promote their business, wear their t-shirt when I'm lifting, or pose for photographs with them at their business I'll gladly do it," Tony said.

Tony is training three times a week at Moe's Gym towards his goal and is hopeful that Macroom will give him the lift he needs to get to Germany.

"I'm ranked number two in the world in my category at the moment, I should be number one," Tony joked, "but I am putting in a lot of hard training ahead of the summer."
