Seniors' season ends in disappointment

SOCCER NEWS

AUL: This weekend saw both Macroom A and B seasons coming to a conclusion. In what was a largely disappointing season, Macroom A finished with an 8-0 loss away to Kinsale.

Macroom A finished bottom of a strong Premier division. On a positive note, the 'B' side did very well after the turn of the year. They started the year 2012 rooted to the bottom, in serious relegation trouble. But since then, both players and management put in huge effort, winning 7 from 11, to finish respectably mid table in 7th.

Safety was assured with a excellent win over local rivals Rylane Celtic two weeks ago, winning 3-1, with Pat Kelleher, Barry Healy and Michael Browne getting the goals. On Saturday, they lost their last league game against Waterloo 4-2, with John Ronan and Frank Kiely grabbing the goals.

It does have significance as John Ronan win top scorer for the B's for the third year in a row. Well done John. The summer now brings some rest, then reorganisation and player acquisition awaits after. The club would like to thank all fans, management, players and members for their efforts this year. U 12s: Carrigtwohill 1, Macroom 2 Macroom under-12s travelled to Carrigtwohill on Thursday, May 3, for their Division 3 game.

Carrigtwohill commenced the game by applying pure pressure on the travelling away side and had two superb shots which were comfortably blocked by the macroom goalkeeper. Macroom broke the Carrigtwohill defense from a corner kick which was taken short where Tomas Collins had a direct kick at goals and planted the ball safely to the back of the Carrigtwohill net. Carrigtwohill responded immediately to level the score at 1-1.

Macroom again took the lead to take the advantage with an outstanding run from Kevin Barrett which resulted in a superb chip to lob the Carrigtwohill goal keeper to go 2-1 up.

Again Carrigtwohill responded with a great run at the Macroom defence and with a superb shot placed the ball to the far corner of the macroom net. Macroom had their chances to finish this game only for poor finishing.

Macroom were denied a penalty by the referee after an unbelievable run from Kevin Barrett to put him through on goal only for the Carrigtwohill goal keeper to bring him down inside the box where no penalty was awarded. Macroom again played superb passing in this game and found Tomas Collins free to plant the ball safely to the back of the home net.

Eventually the final whistle came after an outstanding game where the away side took the three points.

Macroom are now placed third with two games left in the season with a 6pts difference where a second place is possible.
