Promotion hopes still alive

LAST Sunday week Newmarket Town FC hosted champions Lakewood Athletic for the last home game of the season. Newmarket came out deserving 4-2 winners in a great contest.

This was only Lakewood's third loss of the season and two of them were suffered to Newmarket.

An early long range volley from Lakewood found the net but Newmarket however responded brilliantly when a delightful free-kick from Brian Riordan met the head of outstanding centre back Kevin O'connor to finish neatly from a tight angle.

Newmarket went on to completely dominate the second half starting with a well taken goal from Alan Dugdale. This was added to by an excellently worked goal by Colin Stack.

Lakewood responded well and got a goal back but Newmarket finished strongly and sealed victory with a stunning strike from man of the match Mattie Fitzpatrick.

Last Saturday Newmarket played their last game of the season away to Coachford which ended in a thrilling 33 draw thanks to goals from Alan Dugdale who scored twice and Brian Riordan.

Newmarket now await the result of Strand United vs Kanturk in the hope our near neighbours can do us a favour and keep our chances of promotion alive.
