NEWMARKET Town FC enjoyed a tremendous away victory over neighbouring rivals Kanturk when, afte enjoying much of the possession for the whole game, they deservedly ran out 3-1 winners.
After a goalless first half, Newmarket began the second half brightly and shortly opened the scoring thanks to a great ball upfield from goalkeeper Seanie O'connor to John Ryan, who brilliantly rounded the goalkeeper and a defender only to see his shot hit the post. However, the alert Alan Dugdale was there to tap in the rebound.
Brian Riordan then doubled the advantage after getting on the end of a great Alan Dugdale corner.
Kanturk briefly threatened and scored from a well struck free kick to reduce the advantage to one goal. However, Newmarket were not to be denied and in the closing stages, after a great team move, Colin Stack finished brilliantly to close out the game at 3-1.
Newmarket now play at home to champions Lakewood next Sunday and will be hoping to keep the pressure on second place Strand for that final promotion play-off spot.
