WE'VE not always been fans of Spain's tiki taka here at The Week In Sport. We would marvel at the technical brilliance of their game, but it never stirred us in the same way that Barcelona's did. The difference being? For one thing the marvellous little genius that is Lionel Messi.
Germany's pressing and counter attacking game in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa seemed more thrilling too. Their aggression and abandon stood in stark contrast with the controlled Iberians.
Spain came in for a surpising amount of criticism during this tournament. Were they boring? At times the games they played in were, but as others have noted that was due, in large part, to the way their opponents set themselves up to deal with Spain.
In Sunday's final they cut loose. Seeming to react to the crticism. In the process they played some amazing football. Some of the best ever seen. Controlled and effective.
They rightly rank amongst the greatest.
