UCC A 1 Park Utd B 1 (Park Win 6-5 on pen's) AFTER their disappointment at losing the County Cup Final at Turners Cross last season, Park Utd B have a second bite at the cherry after qualifying for the Corinthians Cup Final after a titanic battle against holders UCC in Cork on Saturday last.
Park knew this was their only chance of silverware this season and at the end of the game the celebrations told its own story as they can now prepare for a final showdown with Kilreen at Turners Cross, ona date to be decided. It wasn't the best start for Park as inside 10 minutes they found themselves one down. However, they slowly got a grip on proceedings and started to wear down the opposition. Chances, though, were limited.
Just before the break a Mike Maher free kick eluded everybody and when the ball found the unmarked Denis O'Dea at the back post he directed his header over. The second half was all about Park. Rickey Roynane replaced the hardworking O'Dea just after the break and his pace had UCC on the back foot.
Still, the clock ticked on and Park saw fit to bring on Simon Maher with 15 to go. Five minutes later, the same player had them level.
A great one two, involving Mario Murphy and sub Roynane saw the latter whip in an inviting cross. When the ball fell kindly to Maher he made no mistake and levelled matters at 1-1.
Extra-time prevailed and the only chance worth mentioning in this period was in the dying moments in the second half. When Park's Simon Maher crossed into the box his brother, Michael was only inches away from getting onto the end of it and giving Park the lead.
The dreaded penalties were next and with scores tied on 4-4 after the first five were taken it was down to sudden death. Both sides scored three first sudden death penalties and when UCC missed their second the door was left open for Park to take advantage and they duly obliged and the scenes of delight were unreal as the referee blew for game over.
