SATURDAY saw Fermoy travel to Avondale United for a league match that was really a six-pointer as Fermoy were level on points with Avondale who had a game in hand.
Fermoy were sitting third from bottom, in the relegation zone, with Avondale one place above. Defeat would have almost certainly seen them drop into the second division next season.
Fermoy started well and were catching Avondale on the break, who were defending high up the field. David Kryza and Seamus Roche had good chances early on while Ryan Sargent made an unbelievable save in the first half, palming a shot away that looked destined for the top corner.
The first half finished level 0-0, but Fermoy hadn't taken their chances and should really have been winning the game.
One minute from the restart they took the lead, however, when Sam Tonks powered through the defence and slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Five minutes later they made it 2-0 when an unfortunate Avondale defender headed into his own net.
Avondale started to come back into the game and had a spell of pressure what saw another fantastic save from Ryan Sargent.
However, two minutes from time Seamus Roche went one on one with the keeper and was brought down to earn Fermoy a penalty, with Roche stepping up himself to score.
