Academy bow out at semi-final stage
Doon CBS (Limerick) 1-14
Patrician Academy (Mallow) 0-11 PATRICIAN Academy's interest in the Munster Senior B HC Corn Padraigh came to an end on Saturday when they were defeated by Limerick side Doon CBS in the semifinal at heavy underfoot conditions at Bruff.
Over the hour the winners showed the greater urgency finding scores easier to come by to advance to the final against Dungarvan CBS. The opening sequences saw Patrician Academy start in a very positive mood with Pa Herlihy doing well at midfield and after eight minutes they seemed in a great position when leading by 0-3 to no score.
Gradually Doon CBS came more into the tie gaining supremacy in the key half-back line sector where Sean Ryan excelled at centre-back as they cut off the supply going into the Mallow full forward line. At midfield Darragh O'donovan and Pat Roche came thundering into the game while in attack Russell Quirke, Dean Coleman and Pat Ryan made inroads that helped them get back on level terms at 0-3 apiece by the 14th minute.
The remainder of the half saw Doon CBS shade matters but at times they were unable to exert their authority on the scoresheet with the Mallow keeper Ryan Harkin and full back Killian O'connor making some great clearances to keep their opponents at bay.
Pat Ryan and Aaron Sheehan traded a point by the 20th minute with Russell Quirke and Sheehan continuing the same trend when the game was tied for the third time at 0-5 each soon after. Just before the break the winners took a lead they did not surrender when Pat Ryan pointed that helped them hold a slender lead at the interval.
On the changeover Patrician Academy made a number of positional switches in attempt to mount a serious second half challenge. However, Doon CBS continued to adjust better to the heavy conditions and by the 40th minute both teams traded two points each 0-8 to 0-7.
The North Cork side tried hard to get back into contention with Daniel Sheahan, Mark Heffernan, Aaron Sheehan and Killian O'connor to the fore but they were unable to force parity and instead it was the winners that struck for three pointed frees by Russell Quirke before Pat Ryan was on had to billow the only goal of the game to the net at the three quarters stage 1-11 to 0-7.
Academy refused to give in and finished the game in a positive manner with Aaron Sheehan (2) Pat Healy and Mark Heffernan having points before the final whistle but it was too little too late with the evenly balanced Doon outfit also having points by Pat Ryan, Kevin Stapleton and Russell Quirke to run out worthy winners.
