Members and supporters of the Team Dave Riordan Cycling Club submitted themselves to bare knuckle waxing treatments to raise funds for the forthcoming Malin to Mizen Cycle Challenge next August.

The waxing event removed hair from legs, chests and face, and took place at Geary's Bar Charleville on last Friday night. Among those who volunteered was cyclist Francie O'Shea, who parted company with his moustache, which was 43 years a-growing.

Francie recalled that he was 23 years old when he started growing the fuzz in 1973 the year when the Vietnam War was raging on the Asian Peninsula, The Waltons was the most popular programme on RTE television and the Rolling Stones were top of the charts with their hit single 'Brown Sugar'.

"My children, to this day, never saw me without my lush upper lip growth, which I consented to part with to raise funds for the Malin to Mizen Cycle Challenge," said Francie.

Maurice Riordan, chairman of the cycle club, said that, in the process, Francie had raised €2,000 on an individual basis for Team Dave Riordan's chosen aim of financing a horse riding simulator for the Charleville based St. Joseph's Foundation's new autism unit at Liskennet in Granagh, Co. Limerick.

The popular venue Geary's Bar was thronged to see the mother and daughter team of Evelyn and Lorraine O'Leary from the Mes Amis beauty salon perform the hair removal operation on five other intrepid volunteers, Declan Sexton, Sean Riordan, Jim O'Shea, Conor Howard and Pat Cullen, along with Francie, and they were cheered all the way by the very appreciative onlookers.
