After three weeks of less than ideal golfing weather there was much relief at Mallow Golf Club last weekend that a full three days of action was posible as almost 250 competitors took to the fairways at Ballyellis in search of winter competition success.

As with all weekend competitions over the winter season most players are competing in two competitions simultaneously.

Top billing always goes to the individual three day event which, on this occasion, was won by Michael Madden (21) with a scintillating tally of 35 points. Madden, who was also crowned the Owls player of the year 2013, was level par after nine holes but dropped five shots in the closing five holes.

However, he had done all the hard work early on and won the competition comfortably from a trio on 39 points.

Con B. Murphy (14) took second spot with 2013 captain Danny Butler (9) coming in third on the same tally. Another to impress at the weekend was David Conway (1) who claimed yet another gross prize with 28 points.

There was also impressive rounds from Mark Gleeson (8), Liam O'Donovan (16) and Paul Cosgrave (16) who claimed the best Friday, best Saturday and best Sunday titles respectively.

The scores of almost 120 players were also recorded for round six of the winter league which has now just passed the halfway stage.

Next week will see round seven of the league take place with all players hoping that the conditions are as favourable again which may lead to yet more record scoring at Ballyellis.
