MUSKERRY''S latest sporting star drew hundreds of well-wishers into the town on Monday as European boxing bronze-medallist Christina Desmond returned to a hero's welcome.

The Macroom Club boxer won the bronze medal in the 69kg Youth section of the European Union Women's Boxing Championships in Hungary last week.

Ireland's 26-woman boxing team, which also included world number one Katie Taylor, arrived back in Dublin airport on Sunday night with a record hoard of 15 medals - five gold, three silver and seven bronze.

The 17-year-old was paraded through the town then out west to her native Gaeltacht home place, where a huge welcome home banner was stretched high across the N22 at the Mons Halfway House.
