THE gloves were off on more than one occasion when Meelin and Newmarket took on each other on the pitch. Now, the two rival parishes will go one step further and take the fight indoors.
Meelin and Newmarket are breaking the first two rules about fight club - you do not talk about fight club. But despite this, the rivals are inviting all and sundry to the Hiland, Newmarket as 12 players from each club will take on the other in three 1.5 minute rounds.
After the bouts and once the men have had time to grab their breath, it will be time for the ladies fight and mixed into the fray will be two Kanturk based gardaí Mark Byrne and Kieran Mulcahy.
The fight is in aid of the GAA clubs who are hoping to raise €10,000.
Meelin GAA spokesperson Timmy Brosnan said with a smile that there is "friendly rivalry" between both clubs.
Mr Brosnan told The Corkman that both teams have been training in Newmarket since January for the build-up for the "fun fight" on February 22. He explained that the idea was bounced around last year and he said when Meelin approached Newmarket with the plan, they were fully supportive.
On the night each fighter will have a sponsor and the entry fee will be €20 for the night's entertainment.
