Duhallow AC look ahead to Newmarket 5k Road Race

CORK and Kerry athletes hold a liking for the popular Duhallow AC Road Race on its return for the Classic 5km run in Newmarket. A record number of entries are expected for the Newmarket showpiece on Sunday, December 23 commencing at 1pm.

Previously, the Duhallow promoted event covered the 5-mile distance from Newmarket to Kanturk but the 2011 event offers a shortened 5km circuit of Newmarket town and it met with a positive response.

"We've a tough task to repeat the outstanding success of previous quality fields and hopefully the weather will be favourable. Plans for this season's race were set in motion a number of months ago," said Donie Shine, Chairman of the host Duhallow AC club.

Some of the foremost athletes from across the province and beyond are expected to be amongst the entry listing for the race over a fast course.

"To meet popular demand, we're maintaining the distance to a 5km event over a measured circuit of Newmarket town," said Mr. Shine.

€300 prizes will be awarded to first male and female home with €200 awarded to the top team. Elsewhere, prizes will be allocated to senior, junior, veteran men and ladies categories. Sign on time takes place in Hourigans High Street, Newmarket from 11.30am on race day.

Duhallow AC expect participants from their hugely successful Fit4life Programme organised in association with Cork Sports Partnership in Banteer Sportsfield Park on Thursdays commencing at 7.30pm.

Given the success of the staging todate from its initial start up, the hosting is extended for a further two weeks. A fully qualified instructor from Athletics Ireland, is on hand each Thursday night, to help and aid with the group.

"The Fit 4 Life Programme is designed to give people the opportunity to get fit and enjoy walking/or running in a structured environment. Participants set their own goals and are assisted by the trained Fit4Life leader. The emphasis is on improving fitness in a fun, sociable setting and no previous experience is required. Due to popular demand, the project continues into December," said Mr. Shine.
