HE may be a Kerryman, but that did not bother students at Davis College in Mallow giving footballer Colm 'Gooch' Cooper a warm welcome when he visited the school last week.

The legendary centre-forward, a youth ambassador for the AIB, was visiting the school to promote the Build a Bank initiative, the largest schools competition in the country.

Linked to the business studies curriculum, it encourages students to develop their entrepreneurial skills by setting up and managing their own school bank.

All competing schools will have the change to compete at the national final for a top prize of €5,000.

The Gooch clearly enjoyed his day in Mallow as he posed for photos and signed autographs.

"Students in Cork have a long and successful history in this competition and I would encourage all of the students here in Mallow to get involved in this wonderful project," he said.
