Strong anticipation as Muskerry premier championships enter third round stage

Published 10/07/2014 | 05:26

The Muskerry GAA board continue to keep up to date with their fixture schedule and a number of clubs will be in action in the coming days. There are a number of games in the division's premier championships down for decision and some exciting fare is anticipated.

The first junior game will be in football on Friday evening with one of the favoured contestants Canovee in action at Coachford. Canovee will be strongly favoured to overcome the challenge of Eire Og, who will have a second choice team on display and advance in the championship race. The latter will not be a pushover and they displayed good spirit in their last game when they defeated Cill Na Martra by the narrowest of margins. Players who are likely to figure prominently for Eire Og are Ronan O'Toole, Denis Murphy, John Malone and Brian Darcy O'Sullivan while Canovee will expect Andrew Cronin, Darragh Ring and Sean O'Connor to play significant roles in taking them to the next round of the competition on Saturday next.

There are junior championship contests in both hurling and football and the latter game is an intriguing contest involving Inniscarra and Kilmurry and there is particular interest in the former's form. Last season these two sides contested the first round of the championship when Kilmurry were reigning champions but they were decisively defeated by an Inniscarra side who displayed significant potential. Kilmurry subsequently advanced to the final of the championship through the scenic route however, while Inniscarra failed to reproduce their first round form in their next outing and they departed the scene. The latter certainly have the potential to be leading contenders for ultimate success in Muskerry but much will depend on their approach. Saturday's encounter will give us an indication.

The Ballincollig Credit Union Junior Hurling Championship game arranged for Saturday at Cloughduv could give us an historic result with one of the contestants seeking a first ever victory in Junior (A) championship hurling. The team concerned, Kilmichael, are slightly fancied to get the better of Gleann Na Laoi but the game could go right down to the wire.

Their opponents on Saturday, Gleann Na Laoi, gave a good account of themselves when they lost their first round game to Donoughmore narrowly and they will be full of hope when they line out in Cloughduv on Saturday. The Clougheen side were worthy Junior (B) hurling champions in 2013 when they also captured the league title and they are hoping to make an impact in the top grade of Muskerry hurling. In the past Gleann Na Laoi have participated at Junior (A) hurling level and they contested a championship final in 1993.

Unfortunately they were well beaten by Blarney on that occasion and they have failed subsequently to progress to that stage in the top grade of Muskerry hurling. Their current team are hoping that players like the Cafferkey brothers, Michael and Pio, Ronan McMahon, Derek Healy, Rory Coote and Jamie Luby will be at their best on Saturday to lead them to a hurling victory. Kilmichael will be expecting Peter Kelleher to be a powerful figure in their attack and the other talented hurlers in their line out Conor Cotter and James O'Leary should also make their presence felt in what could be a close fought affair.
