Second half goals help Mallow overcome Fermoy
IT was a stirring fightback.
Under 21 A FC
Second half goals by Pa Herlihy and Michael O'Rourke paved the way for Mallow to overcome reigning champions Fermoy in the Walsh's Pharmacy Fermoy Under 21 AFC at Castletownroche on Saturday.
Following a close enough first half Fermoy shaded matters but on the changeover Mallow inspired by Killian O'Connor showed the greater urgency as they ran out deserving winners.
The opening sequences saw both teams enjoy their moments. Mallow played with the aid of the strong wind but it was Fermoy that worked very well as a unit for long periods of this half with John Mullins, Peter Murphy, Padraigh De Roiste, Martin Brennan, David Chambers and Cian O'Carroll featuring strongly whereas Mallow relied on the free taking duties of Ryan Harkin that ensured the game was deadlocked at 0-3 apiece by the 16th minute.
This trend continued for the rest of the half with Killian O'Connor giving Mallow the lead for the first time in the 20th minute with Fermoy responding when wing back Adam Forde intercepted a Mallow attack and in turn released the impressive Padraigh De Roiste for a long range point. They were also level at 0-5 each before an injury time point by Cian O'Carroll saw the defending champions hold a slender 0-6 to 0-5 lead at the interval.
On the changeover Fermoy were again quick into the action with Mark McGirr, Cian O'Carroll, Sean Moloney and David Geary linking up well when Padraigh De Roiste kicked over another fine point. However the remainder of the game saw Mallow gain a foothold on proceedings.
Killian O'Connor operating at midfield came thundering into the tie while Pa Herlihy, Billy Sheahan, Barry Hootan, Daniel Sheehan, Tom Kennedy, Ryan Harkin and Michael O'Rourke also got through an enormous amount of work and they set the pace in this period. From their next attack Pa Herlihy got inside the Fermoy backline to score the games opening goal and it was immediately followed with points courtesy of Michael O'Rourke, Ryan Harkin and Killian O'Connor to move ahead 1-9 to 0-8 at the mid way stage.
Over the next ten minutes points were traded between Pa Herlihy (2), Aaron Sheehan, David Chambers and Mark McGirr as Mallow maintained a 1-12 to 0-10 lead with five minutes remaining.
In the closing moments Fermoy staged a late rally as they went in search of a goal to stage a grandstand finale. Ronan O'Hagan with two points in quick succession left a goal between the teams but it was Mallow that lifted the siege and at the end of normal time Michael O'Rourke was on hand to score their second goal before Jamie O'Connor completed the scoring with an injury time point as Mallow ran out victors by a seven point margin.
