No let up in handball activity

THE Handball courts have been busy all week as the concluding games of the county 40/20 adult championship are decided.
These are important times for some players as the winner in each grade in both singles and doubles have guaranteed themselves a place on the Cork team for 2014 Munster 40/20 championship ,while the runner up faces in some cases into another battle to secure the play off spot, which will keep alive their hope of going forward as the Cork number 2 to Munster championship 2014.
There is nothing guaranteed there is nothing written in stone, the winner of the county championship is safely into Munster championship the runner up may have to face into more games to guarantee Munster championship action in 2014. Most of the finals have been at this stage a few remain to be completed.
This Thursday evening in Liscarroll at 7pm we have the Over 35 to Golden Masters B Doubles Final in which Fermoy pair Jamie O Donnell/Tom McDonagh take on the Mallow / Ballydesmond pairing Kevin Buckley / Michael Linehan, which promises to be a very close contest there should not be that much between them a few aces will probably decide the destination of the title.
The Senior Doubles Final Liscarroll pair Shane Hedigan / Ger Healy v Mallow / Ballydesmond pairing of Brendan Fleming / Killian Carroll must also be decided with a date over the Christmas period to be decided for that final.
Over the past week there were some interesting contests none more that the Junior Doubles final meeting of Mallow v Kilworth with Mallow pair Tadgh Carroll / Dale Cusack facing Kilworth John Horgan / James Moakley the prediction was very little between the them a few aces will decide the result on the night, but in Liscarroll last Saturday evening there was no doubt about the superiority of the Mallow pair they did not give Horgan/Moakley a look in as they romped to a 21/8, 21/4 win, if they can repeat that form in Munster and further afield they could be a shoe in for All-Ireland glory.
Main focus in Cork Handball over the Christmas period will centre on Liscarroll club as they host Munster U13 and U15 Singles tournaments commencing on Friday, December 27 and running each day to January 1.
Both these tournaments have been running now for over twenty years open to all players in the mentioned age group, they attract entries from all over the country and are recognised as the best underage tournaments in the country.
Again this year there is a very big entry with six days of top class handball guaranteed. It's a big undertaking to run much a large tournament but credit to the players ,parents and mentors who converge on Liscarroll many of them travelling very long distances.
Great credit also to the organisers who put so much time into making this an ongoing success.
