Fermoy Under 21s through to the knock-out phase

Fermoy are through to the knock-out stages when a convincing second half workout saw them emerge worthy winners over Buttevant at Castletownroche on Saturday.

The opening half was played at a hectic pace with both teams quick into the action. Buttevant started in a very determined manner having early points by Kevin Lenahan, Christopher O'Toole and Ryan Fowley to move into a 0-3 to 0-1 lead by the 10th minute.

Fermoy had a goal disallowed for a square ball infringement but nevertheless they made amends soon after when a delivery by Dale Dawson was gathered by the impressive David Lardner who made no mistake when he netted from a tight angle 1-1 to 0-3.

In a closely contested half both teams enjoyed their moments. David Lardner and Seamus Madigan traded a point before Rory McEvoy placed Oisin Ennis for a fine point in the 25th minute.

Fermoy came close to another goal a minute later when Dale Dawson's attempt at goal struck the upright and was eventually cleared. At the otherend Buttevant closed the gap to the narrowest of margins when John O'Neill set up the impressive Ryan Fowley for a point 1-3 to 0-5. However, two late points by Dale Dawson and Eoin Lacey helped Fermoy hold a three point cushion at the interval.

On the changeover Buttevant showed signs of a second half surge when Kevin Lenahan and Ryan Fowley kicked over minors 1-5 to 0-7. Last years beaten finalists Buttevant were denied a chance to take the lead in the 35th minute when two wonderful saves by the Fermoy keeper Gavin Dawson denied Mark Lenahan and Ryan Fowley certain goal chances.

This was a big let off for Fermoy. For the rest of the game they gained the initiative with Garvan Morrisson, Shane Aherne, Rory McEvoy, Daniel O'Flynn, Dale Dawson, Eoin Lacey and David Lardner most effective.

By the end of the third quarter they opened up a four point lead before Eoin Lacey was on hand to score their second goal in the 46th minute following good work by Garvan Morrisson and Daniel O'Flynn to move into a 2-8 to 0-7 lead.

In the last quarter Fermoy outscored their opponents by four points to three and they were also denied a third goal when a point blank save by Buttevant's Ronan Donovan denied Rory McEvoy. In the end there was no denying Fermoy their deserved win.
