Emmets flourish knocks holders Pobal Uí Chaoimh off their stride
Duhallow U21 'B' FC, First Round
Robert Emmets 1-10
Pobal Uí Chaoimh 0-7
ROBERT Emmets announced their arrival as serious contenders on upsetting defending holders Pobal Uí Chaoimh in the opening round to the Duhallow U21AFC in Knocknagree.
Weather conditions were anything but suitable yet credit both sides for serving up a high standard of play given the wind and rain that prevailed. Despite fielding without influencial county player, T J Brosnan, the Newmarket and Lismire combination rattled into their opponents with a power packed second half performance.
Not even two black card offences could halt the Emmets momentum whose stamina and sharpness developed as the game aged. Indeed Emmets might well had goaled in the opening phase, the lively Barry O'Connor saw his effort whistle outside the post.
Twice Emmets took the lead but an improving Pobal Uí Chaoimh made inroads from the positive play of Gary O'Connor, Daniel Murphy, Padraig Collins and Karl Daly. Two points from wing back Murphy and another to John F Daly edged the home side ahead.
Emmets forfeited another goal chance, Donal Hannon just outside the target as Pobal Uí Chaoimh enjoyed a 0-5 to 0-4 interval lead. But upon the restart, Emmets dogged determination and honest endeavours surfaced through the stubborn play of Alan Ryan, Paudie Allen, Colm Noonan and Michael Cottrell.
Upfront Hannon and O'Connor continued to spark while Daniel Culloty had a facility to convert possession into scores. And Emmets were in the driving seat after O'Connor pounced for a brilliantly taken individual goal.
Trailing 1-9 to 0-5, Pobal waited to the 47th min to open their 2nd half account thanks to a converted free by Anthony O'Connor. That score roused Pobal briefly, Emmets incurring two black card offences with O'Connor again on target for the home side.
Emmets held firm and regrouped to mount an offensive for Hannon to add a point to bring the shutters down on a deserved win.
