Dromina start as they mean to go on

HAVING competed in Intermediate Hurling grade for the past 10 years Dromina who regraded this year to Junior A status got of to a winning start in the Cavanagh's Fermoy Avondhu-Imokilly Division 1 HL when they overcame Churchtown at Churchtown on Sunday.

It was a game where very little separated the sides. In the opening half they were level on three occasions. However, Dromina with two goals in quick succession early in the second half gave them the upperhand to take the spoils.

Churchtown aided by the strong breeze saw Tony O'Flaherty score a pointed free in the opening minutes. Kevin Hayes responded with a point from a free and three minutes later the sides were level at 0-2 each.

Churchtown added two more points by Kieran Curtin (free) and a good point by Bobby Rea moved them two clear. Dromina replied with two quick points by Johnny Delee and Paddy Burke to force parity for the third and last time at 0-4 each after 10 minutes.

Two minutes later, Dromina took the lead when good play by Brian Bowles placed Jason Finn for a good point. They also lost key player Pat Hayes due to injury after 14 minutes. Scores were at a premium from here to the break.

The next score came in the 27th minute when the impressive Kevin Hayes pointed while at the other end, Churchtown created two goal chances by Kieran Curtin from frees but the Dromina defences held firm. Just before the break, Kieran Curtin pointed a 65 to trail by 0-6 to 0-5 at the short-whistle.

On the restart, Dromina set the early tone and by the 36th minute they had two goals in quick succession by Kevin Hayes that gave them a seven point cushion. Churchtown narrowed the deficit to five by the end of the third quarter with two pointed frees by Kieran Curtin.

Over the next few sequences of play both sides traded two minors each by Steven Ahern, Tony O'Flaherty (free) Kevin Hayes and substitute Peter Crowley with Dromina still holding a five point lead.

Churchtown tried very hard to get back on terms but only managed to score one more point by Kieran Curtin and instead it was Dromina that did enough to secure victory.
