Colmans miss out despite impressive display

St Brigids (Loughrea) with a great last quarter emerged close but winners over St Colmans (Fermoy) in the Croke Cup All Ireland Senior A HC quarter-final at the splendid UL Grounds in Limerick on Wednesday.

The winners opened with an early point by Dylan Towolawi. Colmans came close to a goal in the third minute when Niall O'Regan put Jake Mehigan through only to be denied by a splendid save by Brendan Lynch with the rebound going out for a '65.

Good play for Brigids by Ben Moran led to a foul on Ronan Glennon with Conor Molloy pointing the free. Colmans opening score came in the 6th minute from a long range pointed free by Niall O'Leary.

St Colmans had two wides before Dylan Towolawi had a great point for the Connacht side. Good play by Diarmuid Linehan led to a fine Barry Murphy point. Ben Moran made a good interception from Sean McCarthy and pointed making it 0-4 to 0-2.

In the 11th minute Diarmuid Linehan pointed a free. St Brigids set up another good attack with Donal Mannion cutting in from the flank only being denied by a splendid save by Jamie O'Leary with the rebound going out for a '65.

Conor Molloy converted the '65. Diarmuid Linehan kept St Colmans in touch with a point. By the end of the first quarter St Colmans had six wides, while St Brigids had five. The sides were level at 0-5 each before Diarmuid Linehan gave them the lead with a free.

St Brigids were back on terms at 0-6 each when Donal Mannion pointed a sideline cut. Brendan Lynch saved well from Niall O'Regan as Diarmuid Linehan edged the Fermoy side ahead with five minutes to the break. Conor Molloy levelled for the third time from a free. Good play by Dylan Towolawi led to a fine point by Jason Nevin.

Linehan levelled for the fourth time at 0-8 each. St Brigids keeper Brendan Lynch was called upon to make another superb save from Brian Roche. In injury time good play by Barry Murphy led to a lead point by Diarmuid Linehan at the break 0-9 to 0- 8.

St Colmans had the perfect start on the changeover. Good play by Shane O'Connor led to a goal by Jake Mehigan. Adam Creed followed with a point that put the Fermoy side five points clear 1-10 to 0- 9.

Just when it was expected that Colmans would push on it was St Brigids who came very strong.

They moved Donal Mannion as a third midfielder and he played very well. Dylan Towolawi pointed with Conor Molloy pointing a free 1-10 to 0-10.

St Colmans were limited to a mere three points in the last 25 minutes. Good play by Donal Mannion led to a fine point by Ronan Glennon. Donal Mannion pointed in the 38th minute. Diarmuid Linehan pointed a free.

Exchanges were very close with St Brigids having a pointed free by Molloy. In the 49th minute good play by Niall O'Leary led to a great Diarmuid Linehan point. A foul on Towolowi led to another pointed free by Molloy.

In the 53rd minute Brigids levelled when a free deep in defence by Stephen Molloy found Keane Holloway who placed Ronan Glennon for the equaliser for the fifth and last time.

The Galway lads finished strong - Stephen Molloy worked well with Sean Fallon who placed Conor Molloy for a lead point. Both sides were off target. St Colmans forced a '65 that was saved by Lynch with Colin Curley clearing to safety.

In the 60th minute Conor Molloy added another pointed free. Donal Mannion cut through the centre and pointed with Ronan Glennon opening up a four point lead in the 6lst minute. St Colmans battled to the end. They came close to a goal scoring chance but had to be content with a late pointed free by Niall O'Leary.
