IN a low scoring Avondhu-Imokilly Division 1 Football League encounter at Mallow on Sunday Buttevant took the points when they emerged close winners over Lisgoold by the narrowest of margins.
The opening half saw Buttevant aided by the crosswind make an encouraging start getting proceedings under way in the 6th minute when a delivery into the square by J.D, Murphy was broken down on the edge of the square by Aidan Hallihan with Kevin Lawless on hand to kick over from close range. Moments later Denis O'Connell with a pointed free made it 0-2 to no score but strangely the North Cork side were unable to use the wind in their favour for the rest of the half when squandering many chances in front of the Lisgoold posts.
Lisgoold on the otherhand worked the short passing to great effect out of the half backline and at the end of the first quarter opened their account when Denis O'Brien pointed. Just one more score was registered before the interval when Aidan O'Connor and William Fitzgibbon worked well along the flank to set up Aidan Hallihan for a well taken point on the stroke of half time that had them ahead 0-3 to 0-1.
For the second half Lisgoold were quick to take control with John Cashman starting very well at centre forward and his three points inside the opening seven minutes edged them in front before wing back Denis O'Brien kicked over his second point in the 42nd minute from a tight angle 0-5 to 0-3. Like Buttevant in the first half Lisgoold were unable to work the cross wind to their advantage for the rest of the game and instead it was Buttevant that slowly found their feet and entering the three quarters stage were back on level terms when midfielders Kevin O'Keeffe and Paul Mannix had minors.
From here to the finish Buttevant worked the short passing to good effect and in the 50th minute a quickly taken '45' by Paul Mannix found Denis O'Connell whose return pass set up Mannix for a fine point with the same player opening up a two point lead moments later when he kicked over another good point after Denis O'Connell, Sean Madigan and Brian O'Shaughnessy combined well 0-7 to 0-5.
Lisgoold battled to the end and even though they missed two scorable chances before the final whistle they completed the scoring when Barry Aherne kicked over a marvellous point but it was not enough with Buttevant holding on for a close win.
