Santa has his work cut out for him this Christmas Eve

THE little nippers of Cork are absolutely astute when it comes to putting pen to paper and asking Santa Claus what they want for Christmas.

The majority of the 270+ letters The Corkman received in the last number of days were very keen on getting their point across and topping the list are all things technological - Xboxes, PSPS, as well as a number of computer games for not only the boys but equally the girls.

There were so many gizmos and gadgets listed that it must have made Santa Claus scratch his head and wonder what happened to to requests for a doll or bike?

But there were also gems, which reporters at this newspaper had a giggle or two when we were like elves ourselves typing up the letters and also of course sending a batch first class to Santa Claus in the North Pole.

As only Irish letters can go, the vast majority of children began by asking Santa Claus how his wife was and they hoped she wasn't sick from cooking and cleaning for him and the elves. And judging from the letters, there won't be a carrott or a cookie left in North Cork as every child plans on dosing not only Santa Claus but also the elves.

Only one child said he would leave out some alcohol and another said he would give Santa Claus a choice of either 'coke or milk.' We are safely assuming the little nipper means the soft drink and not the illegal variety.

But one very keyed-in child is planning on getting "photographic evidence," of Santa Claus visit to his house. The little boy wrote, 'I want a photograph with you. And I'll be on a chair in the dark waiting for you'.

Expect some screams coming from a house in Dromagh over the festive season.

Another wrote, 'I love you Santa and really want to praise you for the day'. The child then proceeded to list off a ream of goods that could put a strain on Rudolph and the rest of the reindeers.

Another began her letter by clearly stating: 'Get busy, Christmas is coming'. She could have a promising career in human resources.

Another wondered how Santa fitted down the chimney. And another began her letter by asking for a pet lizard.

Eight year old Tony reassured Santa that 'sure, I'll be happy out whatever you get me'.

Other children took a very formal approach and signed off their letters with an expectant 'Yours in anticipation'.

So, as The Corkman goes to press and all the letters are safely in Santa' and the elves' possession, we are all hoping that every child gets their wish on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and, who knows, a live lizard may well make its way down a chimney, too.
