CORK North West Fine Gael TD, Áine Collins has welcomed the approval given by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, for Cork County Council's design proposals for the Millstreet Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade.

CORK North West Fine Gael TD, Áine Collins has welcomed the approval given by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, for Cork County Council's design proposals for the Millstreet Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade.

The Council will proceed with preparing the contract documents with a view to seeking tenders as soon as possible.

"It is fantastic news that the upgrading and expansion of the Millstreet Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is being progressed as part of the Department of Environment's Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2013 with the contract estimated at a cost of €4.1 million," she said.

Ms Collins added there is a dedicated focus on improving Ireland's water supply, recognising the important role a high quality and secure water supply is key to attracting business and also in providing a satisfactory level of service to local communities.

"The upgrading of the Millstreet WWTP is crucial to ensuring that our wastewater needs are met and has been needed for some time.

"It is envisaged that the works to be undertaken will be extensive which underlines the current state of disrepair of the facilities that are in place. This makes this investment in the town even more welcome.

The proposed works will hugely improve the sewerage facilities and ensure that Millstreet is in compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive

"These works are a vital part of the improvements this Government is dedicated to achieving in the provision of good quality water services, which is led by the creation of Irish Water to take responsibility of the water supply and the introduction of septic tank regulations to ensure the safety of our ground water.

"All these measures will benefit the community immensely," she said.
